10 Effective Tips for Managing Diabetes

Published

Diabetes is a metabolic condition that provokes high levels of blood sugar. Insulin is produced in the pancreas that moves sugar from the blood to your cells for storing or using energy.
Diabetes either restrains your body from producing insulin or from using it effectively. If left untreated, it can cause severe implications for your health. Untreated high blood sugar caused by diabetes can impair your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and other vital organs.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Common diabetes symptoms are provoked by growing blood sugar. The general symptoms include:
- High appetite
- Increased thirst
- Weight loss
- High urination
- Blurry vision
- Extreme fatigue
- Unhealing sores
Causes of Diabetes
Causes for each type of diabetes are different. These may be:
1- Type 1 Diabetes
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, nor is its cure available. For some strange reason, the immune systems of patients with type 1 diabetes attack the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. People with a family history of type 1 diabetes are more likely to get it. Moreover, it is said that a set of viruses can attack the immune system to respond this way.
2- Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes can occur due to several genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight can significantly increase your risk for type 2 diabetes. Carrying extra fat, particularly around your belly, can make your body insulin-resistant, and this diabetic condition is common in family history.
3- Gestational Diabetes
Hormonal changes provoke gestational diabetes during pregnancy. The placenta makes hormones that make a pregnant woman’s cells less susceptible to insulin, causing high blood sugar during pregnancy.
Tips for Controlling Diabetes
It is often challenging to keep the blood sugar levels within the defined range of a diabetic patient. It is mainly because many things can shift your blood sugar levels unexpectedly. According to experts, you must understand the managing criteria of diabetes to improve your energy and body recovery abilities. It can also help avoid other health complications, including nerve damage, kidney failure, heart attack, eyesight impairment, and gum diseases.
Your primary care physician can help you manage your diabetes as per your stage and symptoms. Following are some practical ways to manage your diabetes:
1- Keep Calm & Avoid Stress
According to studies, stress and anxiety can cause your blood sugar level to increase drastically. Therefore, people with diabetes need to find activities that help them relax. You can try walking in the fresh air, listening to soothing music, or gardening. You should indulge in activities that soothe your mind and help you unwind.
2- Balance the Fluids
According to experts, consuming alcohol can induce signs of low blood sugar. Your liver starts to process alcohol and gets too busy to perform other vital body operations, including discharging stored sugar to compensate for low levels. Moreover, consuming alcohol can hinder your thinking abilities.
3- Transform According to your Life Phases
Experts have also explained that hormone levels can change blood sugar levels. For instance, during menopause, a woman should plan her medication, meals, or exercise accordingly. Women may need to make more adjustments and check their blood glucose more often during such times. It is recommended to consult your doctor to choose the right plan for the body.
4- Be Careful about the Medications
You must ensure that your medication is not sweetened, as it can affect your blood sugar levels. In some cases, it was reported that people did not check their meds and took sweetened tablets, leading to an increase in diabetic symptoms.
As the Mayo Clinic notes, some medications are sweetened, and others may affect healthy glucose levels in other ways.
5- Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Diabetes puts patients at a significantly increased risk for gum disease. According to the experts, people with diabetes cannot entirely fight infection from bacteria generated in the mouth.
